Denis Villeneuve Reteams with Jake Gyllenhaal for ‘The Son’

By May 26, 2016

After working together on Prisoners and Enemy, Jake Gyllenhaal is once again teaming up with director Denis Villenueve for The Son, an adaptation of the acclaimed crime novel from Scandinavian author Jo Nesbo. The story revolves around Sonny Lofthus, incarcerated for a crime he never committed, and who breaks out of prison when he learns that his father, a decorated police officer, may not have committed suicide after all.

It’s the same kind of gritty material that Villenueve seems to be attracted to, and after turning in two stellar crime dramas with Prisoners and last year’s pulse-pounding Sicario, I can’t wait to see how this one turns out. Of course, with Villenueve signed on to direct the new Blade Runner film, we’re probably going to be waiting awhile for this one.

Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker will produce The Son via their new company, Nine Stories, with Bold Films acting as co-producer. In a statement, Marker spoke of her excitement about the project:

“Denis is one of the most inspiring filmmakers working today, and partnering with him on The Son represents everything that Jake and I strived for when we launched the company. Provocative and edgy material in collaboration with a visionary storyteller. We were attracted to The Son because beneath its dark and violent exterior is a universal story about a man who seeks the truth.”

This won’t be the first project from Nine Films, however, with Gyllenhaal recently wrapping principal photography on Stronger, director David Gordon Green’s drama set against the backdrop of the Boston Marathon bombing of 2013. Stronger is currently slated for a 2017 release by Lionsgate, and Nine Films is also developing an adaptation of David Mermelstein best-selling novel The Man Who Made it Snow, with Antoine Fuqua directing and Gyllenhaal attached to star.

In the meantime, you can keep an eye out for Gyllenhaal in Nocturnal Animals, which Focus Features will release later this year.
