In another big news item coming from Disney’s shareholder conference, Variety reports that the studio has officially announced their intent to create Frozen 2, the sequel to the highly popular and profitable 2013 film.
Directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck are expected to return for the sequel, developing the new film along with producer Peter Del Vecho of Walt Disney Animation Studios, who won an Oscar last year for “best animated feature.”
While the news isn’t necessarily that surprising, it’s certainly going to be welcome to many fans across the world. The original film generated nearly $1.3 billion in ticket sales worldwide, with over $800,000 of that total coming from international markets. Over the last year, Disney has been pretty quiet about its future plans for the franchise, outside of a Broadway show and an animated short that will bow this weekend in front of the live-action adaptation of Cinderella, directed by Kenneth Branagh. Disney has also increased the exposure of Frozen and its characters in their theme parks, with Frozen-themed events and attractions having prominent places at both California’s DIsneyland Resort as well as Florida’s Walt Disney World.
John Lasseter, chief creative officer of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, had this to say on returning to the film’s world:
We enjoyed making ‘Frozen Fever’ so much and being back in that world with those characters. Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck have come up with a great idea for a sequel and you will be hearing a lot more about it and we’re taking you back to Arendelle. We are so excited about that.
GeekNation will be keeping an eye on any developments for Frozen 2 as they happen, so be sure to keep an eye on us!
