Disney Moves Up Marvel’s Ant-Man To Summer 2015 Release

By September 10, 2013

Last night, Disney announced that Marvel’s highly-anticipated anticipated live-action adaptation of Ant-Man will hit theaters in July of 2015 rather than the initial November target date.

Variety reports that Disney gave no definitive reason for moving up Ant-Man‘s date, but it seems to be the right move: had it stayed with the November release, Edgar Wright’s superhero film would have to compete with the likes of James Bond, which is never an easy feat to beat at the box office. Plus, Disney also has The Avengers: Age Of Ultron opening May 1st and the fifth installment of the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise opening July 10th, not to mention Pixar’s Inside Out dropping on June 19th.

In a nutshell, Disney’s out to make Summer 2015 their bitch in a BIG WAY.

For those of you not in the know about Ant-Man, that’s not a problem: I’ll give you the short version!

Ant-Man’s alter-ego is Dr. Hank Pym, a biochemist who uses his latest finding – a group of subatomic particles – to create a size-altering formula, using himself as the test subject. Despite the first experiment going a little wonky, Pym makes some tweaks to develop an instrument that helps him communicate with and control insects.

Pretty cool, right?!

Outside of Edgar Wright (Cornetto Trilogy, Scott Pilgrim) directing the script he co-wrote with Attack The Block writer/director Joe Cornish – which they’ve been developing with Marvel the last seven years – all we really know about Ant-Man is that this film would have kicked off Marvel’s Phase Three, but now it’ll be kicked up to Phase 2, found alongside Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and the film on everyone’s lips lately, Guardians Of The Galaxy.

Marvel DID bring some test footage to a panel at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con (above) but the footage was careful not to reveal the actor inside…the film has yet to be cast (yes, I checked IMDb) but names being thrown around by fans are Patrick Wilson (Watchmen) and everyone’s favourite ship captain and all-around rogue, Nathan Fillion (“Firefly,” “Castle”).

As for me, I’m kinda hoping for Simon Pegg…but I have a feeling it’s a pipe dream at this point.

Either way, I’m excited infinity TIMES infinity.

See you soon, man.
