Disney Plans ‘Star Wars’ Halloween Special for ‘SportsNation’ on ESPN for Synergy

One of the most notoriously terrible things to come out of the success of the Star Wars trilogy (besides the prequels) was the “Star Wars Holiday Special” in 1978, but it may not be the worst holiday special with ties to the galaxy far, far away.

In one of the worst uses of corporate synergy I can remember, Disney is letting ESPN2 air a Star Wars-themed Halloween special of their series “SportsNation” tomorrow, October 30th, at 7:30pm Eastern time.

THR says the special will have characters like Boba Fett, Yoda, Darth Vader, R2D2, Chewbacca, and C-3PO stop by, which makes sense since they can be played by anyone in a suit and mask. But they also say that Han Solo is involved, and while we can all but guarantee that Harrison Ford isn’t involved in this garbage, we’re not sure how the smuggler will pop up in this special. And if you’re not too busy smacking yourself in the face and screaming “Why!” you can check out what a preview right here with Michelle Beadle in Luke Skywalker mode:

The video above is the opening of the special, and in the episode Max Kellerman and Marcellus Wiley will play Boba Fett and Yoda respectively (and disrespectfully). ESPN2 is even decking out the “SportsNation” set to look like the Millennium Falcon, which sounds cool in theory, but will be tainted by the fact that it’s part of this dumb Halloween special.

Anyway, the episode in question will still do what ESPN2 does best by showcasing sports clips, though they will have a Star Wars twist by highlighting categories like “Best Jedi Mind Trick” and “Most Unstoppable Skywalkers.” Just kill me now.

And it wouldn’t be true synergy with reciprocity, and that’s why to go along with the episode, there will be an exclusive sneak peek at an upcoming episode of the Disney XD series “Star Wars Rebels.” If you miss the “SportsNation” special because you have something better to do like removing each finger on one of your hands with a hand saw, don’t worry, because it will re-air on Halloween in the show’s normal slot at 3pm on ESPN2.
