The Doctor Who world and the characters in it are so vast, that the storytelling possibilities are nearly endless. Watching the Doctor and his companion travelling through all kinds of adventures and zany situations is one of the biggest appeals of the series for fans, and meeting the different characters they run into along the way, whether they be one-offs or recurring roles, it never seems to matter as long as the journey continues.
There have been successful Doctor Who spin-offs before though that focused solely on some of the more memorable Doctor Who side characters, including Torchwood, K9 and Company, and The Sarah Jane Adventures, all of which have been received well by the fans. It looks like we can add yet another title to that list now too.
Today, the BBC has officially announced a new Who spin-off called Class, which will be set in contemporary London from YA author Patrick Ness. The series will take place at the Coal Hill School, the place where Who began all those year ago in 1963’s “An Unearthly Child”. Here’s the show’s official description:
“Incredible dangers are breaking through the walls of time and space, and with darkness coming, London is unprotected. With all the action, heart and adrenaline of the best YA fiction (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Hunger Games), this is Coal Hill School and Doctor Who like you’ve never seen them before.”
Doctor Who showrunner, Steven Moffat, commented on the announcement with the following:
“No one has documented the dark and exhilarating world of the teenager like Patrick Ness, and now we’re bringing his brilliant story-telling into ‘Doctor Who’. This is growing up in modern Britain – but with monsters!”
In addition, Ness shared his excitement to be joining the Who world:
“I’m astounded and thrilled to be entering the ‘Doctor Who’ universe, which is as vast as time and space itself. There’s so much room there for all kinds of amazing stories, and to work with Steven Moffat and Brian Minchin to find a place to tell one of my own has been an absolute joy. I can’t wait for people to meet the heroes of ‘Class,’ to meet the all-new villains and aliens, to remember that the horrors of the darkest corners of existence are just about on par with having to pass your A-Levels.”
Coal Hill has been featured rather predominantly throughout the Doctor Who series, with the Doctor’s current companion, Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) even being a teacher at the school. Whether or not the spin-off will feature any of the characters from Who including Clara, the Doctor (Peter Capaldi), or otherwise is still unknown, but I wouldn’t put it past Steven Moffat and Ness to link the shows in the best ways they can.
The series sounds like an interesting companion to the main show, and considering that some of the best Doctor Who stories are when the show focuses on side or one-off characters, the potential for some very dramatic and fun storytelling arcs is unlimited at this point. I don’t think many fans saw this announcement coming, but it looks like the BBC might have yet another winning Who spin-off on their hands.
Class is set to begin shooting in Spring 2016.
