As some of you may or may not know, when that Deadpool test footage was released over a year ago, it sort of created an entirely new path for Fox to take with their cinematic universe moving forward. Not only did the fan reaction to the footage encourage Fox to greenlight the long-troubled standalone film, but it also derailed an X-Force project that had been in development for sometime.
The X-Force film had received a script treatment from Kick-Ass 2 writer and director Jeff Wadlow, with the original plan intending for a theatrical release sometime after X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2014. While not much word has been made about the project since, with the introduction of some more faithful intepretations of Colossus and Deadpool on their way, as well as rumors of Cable appearing in a Deadpool sequel, it is still possible the film could happen at some point.
Concept artist Greg Semkow recently revealed some new concept art for the X-Force film as well that he had created based off of Wadlow’s script, and it gives us our first real look at the film’s intended lineup. The image includes Cable front and center, who is a telepathic badass (and Cyclops’ son); Domino, an expert shooter and fighter with enhanced skills in various different types of combat; Warpath, who is equipped with super strength and healing abilities; Cannonball in the background, a character that can not only fly on jet propulsion fuel, but also manifest force fields of his own creation, and a mysterious fifth member in a hoodie.
Check out the image below:
There’s no word for sure on who that mysterious fifth member could be, although some rumors suggest it could be either Rogue, Psylocke, or Hope Summers, who all have history with the X-Force comics. These also aren’t the only characters that would be appearing in the film, as the script had also been confirmed to feature Deadpool at one point, although now that the new film is on its way to theatres – whether or not that is still a possibility is unknown.
Honestly, the Fox cinematic universe seems more ready for an X-Force film now than it did back in 2013 (let’s ignore Fantastic Four okay?), and with stories like Days of Future Past, Deadpool, Apocalypse, and Gambit all being told within the next year or so, it’s possible that the studio is planning on releasing the film sometime after. If this concept art has made anything clear – it’s that fans certainly want to see it happen.
