Donald Glover Finally Cast As Spider-Man (Sort Of)

It’s no secret that actor/musician Donald Glover (“Community”) is a HUGE fan of the webbed wonder that is Spider-Man and has always wanted to play him. Now he’s getting a chance to do just that…well, kind of.

The Wrap reports Glover will lend his voice to the next season of “Ultimate Spider-Man: Web-Warriors” on Disney XD as the young Miles Morales, a character loosely inspired by Glover himself and the actor’s unsuccessful attempt to get cast as Spider-Man in Sony’s reboot 2012 reboot. “Community” fans all over are happy – they’ve been saying for quite some time that Glover would make a great Morales in a live-action film (if they decide to boost Morales’ age).

Created by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli, Miles Morales is a 13-year-old half-black, half-hispanic boy from Brooklyn who first appeared in August 2011’s Marvel’s Ultimate Fallout #4 (following the death of Peter Parker) and the second Spider-Man in the Ultimate Marvel universe, which parallels and re-imagines characters we know and love.

In a recent interview with USA Today, Stephen Wacker (VP of Marvel Television’s animation division) says Glover’s “got a real warmth that suits the character really, really well. If you’ve read the Miles Morales comics, Donald’s voice nails what you’ve been reading,” and with Marvel’s editor-in-chief Axel Alonso describing Morales as “an intelligent nerd with an aptitude for science similar to his predecessor (Peter Parker),” this role was seemingly tailor-made for someone LIKE Donald Glover to give him a voice and let the non-comic book reading Spidey fans a look at this fascinating little dude.

But since the proof is ALWAYS in the pudding, here’s a clip of Glover as Morales meeting Peter Parker (Drake Bell) for the first time!

But don’t give up on seeing Glover on the big screen as Spidey, because he sure hasn’t.

I’m still holding out, though. I still have hopes to do something like that one day. I don’t look at this as second place. Spider-Man, he’s such an icon — you have to do something with him.

“Ultimate Spider-Man: Web-Warriors” returns to Disney XD this August 31st, but Glover’s episode won’t air until 2015.

What do you think? Was there someone else on your radar you’d rather hear voice Morales? Who SHOULD play him in a live-action film (if the opportunity presents itself)?
