So far we know very little about Disney and Lucasfilm’s planned Young Han Solo spin-off film, other than that it will tell the origin stories of both Han Solo and Chewbacca, with the former recently confirmed to be played by Hail, Caesar! breakout star Alden Ehrenreich at Star Wars Celebration Europe last month. Thanks to two new reports this week thougb, we may not only know another character that could be appearing in the film, but who could be playing him as well.
The first report comes from The Wrap, who says that in addition to Han and Chewie, the currently untitled spin-off film will feature an appearance from a young Lando Calrissian, a character originally brought to life in the Original Trilogy by Billy Dee Williams, who has also been rumored to be making a return in next year’s Star Wars: Episode VIII.
The news doesn’t end there though, with Birth.Movies.Death. adding that Community and The Martian star, Donald Glover, reportedly being the studio’s number one pick for the role right now, which doesn’t necessarily come as a surprise considering the similarities between his and Williams’ onscreen personas.
Now, it should be noted that the report mentions it doesn’t even know if an offer has been made to Glover yet, and there’s a possibility that directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are still seeing actors for the role as well. Though, Alden Ehrenreich was the first actor they saw for Han Solo and even though they ended up looking at hundreds of actors for the coveted role, look at how that turned out?
Similar to Ehrenreich as well, I like Glover for this role because I think he could bring a charm and charisma similar to what Billy Dee Williams did originally, without just trying to do an imitation of the actor. We’re a long way out from confirmation on this casting, I’m assuming however, and to be honest I don’t even know for sure if Glover would be interested in the role or not. After already landing a spot in the high-profile Spider-Man: Homecoming though, 2016 could prove to be a very good year for Glover on the acting side, if this ends up being true.
The Young Han Solo Movie is set to hit theatres on May 25th, 2018.
