In 2012, Mike Birbiglia’s semi-autobiographical effort Sleepwalk With Me marked the standup-comedian-turned-director as a filmmaker that we should be keeping our eyes on. Based on Birbiglia’s own experiences that he developed into an off-Broadway show, it was a funny, sad and incredibly sweet film, and we’ve been patiently awaiting his follow-up ever since.
Don’t Think Twice follows a group of improv comedians and the chaos that ensues when one of them finally catches a big break – leaving the rest of them to accept that not everyone is destined to make it. Praised for its honesty and hilarity, Birbiglia’s sophomore effort premiered at the 2016 SXSW Film Festival, and although I wasn’t fortunate enough to catch a screening in Austin, the critical reception has been overwhelmingly positive, with the film garnering rave reviews on the festival circuit.
Don’t Think Twice is headed to theaters this summer, and you can get your first official look at the film via the new trailer below.
As you can see, Birbiglia has assembled an incredibly talented cast that includes Keegan-Michael Key, Gillian Jacobs, Kate Micucci, Chris Gethard, Tami Sagher and of course, Birbiglia himself. The film has repeatedly been lauded for its authenticity and its reverence toward the improv community, and it probably doesn’t hurt that most of the performers in the film actually come from improv backgrounds.
With a great lineup of funny people and a solid debut trailer, Don’t Think Twice is definitely on my radar. Everything about this just looks wonderful, and I can’t wait to check it out this summer.
Don’t Think Twice opens in New York on July 22, and will expand into wide release in the following weeks.
