A few months ago, the mysterious WWII project, Dunkirk, was announced to be director Christopher Nolan’s next film, which he would be co-writing once again with his brother, Jonathan Nolan, and would be starring an already stellar lineup of actors with Tom Hardy, Kenneth Branagh, and Mark Rylance all cast in the movie from basically the first official announcement.

Shooting in France on location right now as well, the very first set photos from the movie have been revealed, which not only tease the period setting, but the kind of authentic terrain that we can expect to see blown up on the big screen once again from Nolan, through the glorious IMAX lenses.

Photographer, Pierre Volot has been posting several set photos from the film itself, including some of Nolan walking around the set as well. You can check out some of the best photos below:

In addition to the previously mentioned names, Dunkirk will also feature a number of unknown actors and newcomers in the film world including Fionn Whitehead, Jack Lowden, Aneurin Barnard, and even One Direction member, Harry Styles, making his acting debut as well.

The film tells the true story of Operation Dynamo, an evacuation orchestrated by the British, which saved the lives of over 330,000 allied troops trapped in the French seaport of Dunkirk in May and June of 1940, who were surrounded by Nazi troops closing in on them. Nolan will be shooting the movie with a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large format cameras as well, which should only help to make the scope and scale of the war epic come to life in even greater ways and make the immersion into the film’s world feel even more effortless, something that Nolan has practically perfected at this point in his career.

Coming off of the divisive Interstellar in 2014 as well, the idea of Nolan finally tackling a period war epic, which almost feels too perfect for the filmmaker, with this kind of presentation and format available to him, makes Dunkirk one of the most exciting project of summer 2017.

Dunkirk is set to hit theatres on July 21st, 2017.
