DVD Review: The Campaign, Safety Not Guaranteed, Rosemary’s Baby and more…

By November 1, 2012
Here are this week’s digital leftovers, perfect for watching with all those leftover Kit-Kats and Skittles. Also, this may be one of the skimpiest blu-ray weeks of the year. Honestly. It’s not just me being lazy.

The Campaign — Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis in what should have been a slam-dunk political satire, but is instead a random bunch of mildly amusing sketch comedy. The cast is pretty impressive (Brian Cox, Jason Sudeikis, Dylan McDermott, Dan Aykroyd, John Lithgow!), and the adorable Sarah Baker steals a few scenes, but as a broad farce it’s just kinda raunchy, and as a political satire it’s puddle-deep and toothless. As a big Will Ferrell fan, however, the man did make me chuckle more than once. The blu-ray offers an extended version with ten extra minutes, additionally wacky deleted scenes, and a gag reel.

Safety Not Guaranteed — Mark Duplass and Aubrey Plaza star in an indie comedy about a guy preparing to travel back in time. Haven’t seen this one yet, but people I trust are rather enthusiastic about it. So there’s a tip.

Rosemary’s Baby — Yes, the original. Don’t panic; there’s no remake. (Yet.) It just seems right to mention this creepy Roman Polanski classic because it just got re-issued from the people at Criterion. As such, expect all new interviews and retrospective featurettes and an audio/video presentation that true film fanatics will appreciate.

Speaking of Criterion, they’ve also just released a 15-film Alfred Hitchcock set that should kick-start the salivary glands of any legitimate movie geek. Rear Window, Vertigo, The Birds, Psycho, North By Northwest, Rope, The Man Who Knew Too Much, The Trouble with Harry…and more. Obviously. With supplemental material on each movie and new digital transfers, this might be the last Hitchcock set you’ll ever need. Which is good because it’s like 230 bucks.

“A Christmas Story Part 2” — Yes, this is actually a thing. Consider this a warning.

New on VOD: Sleep Tight. It’s creepy!

Next week: Spider-Man, The Muppets, and the begin of the Christmas movie parade on home video!
