You have no doubt been following a recent social media movement that saw a hashtag #ForceForDaniel go viral… For those that haven’t heard about the terminally ill Star Wars fan, Daniel Fleetwood, here’s a short run down.
Fleetwood was diagnosed with spindle cell sarcoma, a rare form of cancer, back in July by his doctors and given about two months to live. Up until last week, I had no idea Daniel was out there or that he had been trying to contact the powers that be for a screening.
Enter social media, a force for actual good when put in the right hands.
The #ForceforDaniel Twitter campaign was then created by his wife Alison to convince Disney, Lucasfilm and Bad Robot to show Fleetwood the latest episode before its December 18th premiere. It then picked up traction when tweets and retweets flooded the social media-sphere, even from the most notable of Star Wars actors such as Mark Hamill and John Boyega.
And the universe, IE Disney and JJ, were listening.
For just recently, as in today, Daniel’s wife updated her Facebook with a post:
Daniel, as early as one hour or so ago, was then given a private screening after getting the call from JJ Abrams himself yesterday! Of course, this message from Ashley has, again, gone viral, and is being shared all over the web. Even Mark Hamill himself tweeted out his pleasure in the news.
We here at GeekNation can’t help but smile at this news. For Disney, Lucasfilm and JJ Abrams, it is nice to see that there is still magic out there in this world, and not lost in some galaxy far, far away. We can only wish Daniel the best and send out our thoughts and prayers in dealing with his illness.
May the Force be with you, Daniel. Always…
Via theWrap, Daniel Fleetwood passed away peacefully in his sleep we learned on November 10th. His wife Ashley updated his Facebook page with the sad news.
Via the Wrap is Ashley’s note:
On Tuesday morning, his wife, Ashley, confirmed his death on Facebook: “Daniel put up an amazing fight to the very end. He is now one with God and with the force. He passed in his sleep and in peace. He will always be my idol and my hero. Please hug uncle Marc for me and give Lucy lots of kisses. Rest in peace my love.
Daniel is finally, one with the Force. Our thoughts and prayers to Ashley and his family.
