Last night at Sony’s annual E3 press conference, the studio unveiled the first look at a new entry in their iconic God of War franchise, showcasing an older Kratos who seems to have abandoned his violent ways. The extended gameplay demo opened with the former Spartan warrior taking a young boy – possibly his son – hunting in the snowy wilderness, only to be set upon by strange creatures. As you can imagine, things go a bit south from there.
Check out the first footage from God of War right here.
With a giant troll that mentions Valhalla and an enormous dragon soaring overhead at the end of the demo, it looks like Kratos might have wandered into the realm of Nordic mythology – a pretty clever change of pace, considering the series has done just about everything possible with the Greek gods at this point. The visuals here are absolutely gorgeous, and the combat looks to be every bit as brutal and intense as the other entries into this long-running franchise.
Shortly after the reveal, the PlayStation Blog posted an essay from God of War creative director Cory Barlog, who spoke about his desire to breathe new life into the series:
“Several years ago we at Santa Monica Studio began the journey of creating a new God of War. All of us recognized a special honor and responsibility to create a different and better and truly more memorable experience than before. I realized early on that we had to make changes in every aspect of the game.
I knew I didn’t want to simply reboot the franchise, starting over with a retelling of the origin story. I wanted to reimagine the gameplay, give players a fresh perspective and a new tactile experience while delving deeper into the emotional journey of Kratos to explore the compelling drama that unfolds when an immortal demigod makes a decision to change.”
No release date for God of War has been announced, but I wouldn’t expect to see it until sometime in late 2017.
