Since breaking out in a huge way with her role as Kate Austen on the hit ABC series “LOST,” Evangeline Lilly has starred in two notable films: the robot boxing family drama Real Steel, and Kathryn Bigelow’s Best Picture-winning war movie The Hurt Locker. As you can see in the image above (courtesy of EW), the actress has also jumped into filming what could likely be the biggest movie of her career.
Lilly briefly spoke about her experience filming The Hobbit when Real Steel was making the press rounds:
“I’m having the greatest time in the world in New Zealand. I was a huge fan of J.R.R. Tolkien growing up, and if I had to choose anything I could have pretended to be in those books, it would have been, hands down, without question, an elf. And I am playing an elf. And it’s the most fun. It’s the greatest thing ever. My ears are the biggest things you’ve ever seen, and I love them.”
Not exactly a revelatory statement, but now we can finally get our own look at those ears she was talking about and the bow & arrow she’ll wield in the film. In Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Lilly plays Tauriel, an elf character that was created specifically for the movie and doesn’t exist in Tolkien’s books. (Doesn’t she look a little bit like Link from the Zelda games?) Rumor has it she’ll have a romance with Orlando Bloom’s Legolas character, and we’re confident that won’t be a useless subplot that just serves to stretch out the narrative to fill three movies when one or two would have done just fine. Because after how tight and focused the first Hobbit entry was, why would anyone have any reason to worry about this franchise?
