By my money, FX’s Fargo might honest to God be the best series on television right now. After an impressive first season, which proved it was more than just a hokey imitation of the original, beloved Coen Brothers film from the 90s, the series came back with a second season that was bigger, better, and spectacular from beginning to end. I don’t think I’ve seen a season of television so good, in quite a long time.
Now, after the third season has already been teased heavily by creator Noah Hawley, it looks like the series has found its lead, and oh boy, this is like something of a dream come true for his die hard Minnesotan movie fan.
TheWrap is reporting that Ewan McGregor has been cast in the new season as – get this – not one, but its two leading roles. McGregor will reportedly be playing twin brothers in the new season, Emmit and Ray Stussy. Emmit is the Parking Lot King of Minnesota, who is described in the report as a “handsome, self-made, real estate mogul and family man, he sees himself as an American success story.”
His brother, Ray, on the other hand is described as a cautionary tale, “Balding, pot-bellied, Ray is the kind of guy who peaked in high school. Now a parole officer, Ray has a huge chip on his shoulder about the hand he’s been dealt, and he blames his brother, Emmit, for his misfortunes.” Production on the new season is currently set to shoot later this year, with a 2017 air date in mind.
Coincidentally enough, you can also find McGregor playing two characters in the same movie right now in Last Days in the Desert, where he gives possibly one of the best performances of his entire career as Jesus and The Devil. Go watch it if you haven’t.
Anything involving Ewan McGregor to me though is good news. He manages to elevate anything he’s in, and has found a very special place in my movie love as one of my favorite actors of all time. It’s like the Fargo fan in me and the McGregor fan just met at a party and decided to get married. I already volunteer to be the best man.
Fargo Season Three is set to air on FX sometime in 2017.
