There have been rumors of a possible Trainspotting sequel for years, but after confirmation from director Danny Boyle and several of the film’s cast members, it looks like filming on the long-awaited sequel is finally set to begin this year, with Boyle previously citing hopes of a 2017 release date for the film as well.

Now, Renton himself, Ewan McGregor has confirmed a May production start date on the project as well, which will be based on the follow-up novel by Irvine Welsh, titled “Porno”, which picks up with the group of characters crossing paths once again, this time set against the backdrop of the porn industry.

While speaking with Collider, McGregor commented on the strength of the film’s script, written by John Hodges, and why now feels like the right time for the sequel to finally come into fruition:

““We haven’t started yet, we start shooting at the end of May. It’s been 10 years since Irvine Welsh wrote the sequel novel, “Porno”, so it’s been a long time, a lot of speculation. For me, too! 10 years ago, I didn’t want to do it; I wasn’t ready to do it. Also, there was no script. The script only arrived very recently, which was really, really, really good.

I think, if that had not happened, none of us would be into it. I think we’re all sort of somewhat protective of what Trainspotting means to people, and what it means to us. None of us want to make a poor sequel to it. So had we not been presented with the most extraordinary script, which we were, I think we wouldn’t be making the sequel. But because we were, we are.”

Arguably, the original Trainspotting is one of the most beloved films of the 1990s, and managed to launch several of its stars, McGregor included, into moviestardom in a number of ways, as well as really announcing Danny Boyle onto the scene as a director to watch out for. With all of the praise behind the sequel’s script, the interesting premise, and the fact that a majority of the original cast are returning as well, Trainspotting 2 is shaping up to be one of the more interesting sequels in the Hollywood pipeline right now.

Trainspotting 2 is set for release sometime in 2017.
