Family Guy - Key Art

If you haven’t watched last night’s new episode of “Family Guy,” you’ll want to stop reading immediately and wait until you do, because from here on out, there will be spoilers about a major death in the series that no one saw coming.

On last night’s episode entitled “Life of Brian,” the Griffin family said goodbye to their dear friend Brian Griffin. Following another time travel misadventure with Stewie and Brian (which the audience joined in the middle of a chase), Stewie destroyed his time machine so they would never create any problems in history again. But shortly thereafter, Brian ends up getting hit by a car, and he doesn’t survive.

Family Guy - Vinnie

While many viewers expected Brian (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) to come back before the end of the episode, the Griffin family mourned for awhile, and then ended up getting a new dog named Vinnie. The mobster-sounding pet seemed like he might be a shady character, but he turned out to be a great guy, and Brian never miraculously returned before the end of the episode.

Some fans are outraged by this seemingly major change to the Fox animation staple, with THR reporting that a petition is already being signed that has over 1,500 signatures. Solidifying Brian’s death, Fox also released this video paying tribute to the fallen dog genius:

However, while all this pomp and circumstance indicates that this change is being taken seriously and will be a permanent change in the “Family Guy” universe, it feels too dramatic to stick. First of all, this is a character that MacFarlane voices and has been a main character since the series began. Plus, a look at the synopsis of the forthcoming final episode of 2013 seems to confirm those suspicions. The December 8th episode of “Family Guy” sounds like another normal episode with Peter and Quagmire forming a musical duo like Simon & Garfunkel (where Vinnie will likely appear again), but the December 15th episode hints at a plan to bring Brian back:

When Carter Pewterschmidt cancels the annual Quahog Christmas carnival, because he hates the holiday, Peter must transform his father-in-law from a Scrooge into a hometown hero in order to salvage the event. Meanwhile, Stewie devises a master plan to get the one and only thing he wants for Christmas in the all-new “Christmas Guy” episode of “Family Guy” airing Sunday, Dec. 15 (9:00-9:30 PM ET/PT) on FOX.

Since Stewie was Brian’s best friend, and the impact of his death was clearly felt on last night’s episode, it stands to reason that the only thing he would want for Christmas is to bring him back. Basically, we wouldn’t count on Brian being gone for good, and this reaction from fans is likely exactly what Fox wants.

What do you think? Will Fox and the “Family Guy” team bring Brian back from the dead, or is he gone for good? Sound off below.
