Colin Farrell Joins Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

When the Harry Potter franchise concluded in 2011, it was never really made clear whether or not fans would get to see another film or book set in that world again. J.K. Rowling has always remained vague when it comes to the possibilities, and for a while, fans were left pretty in the dark when it comes to the future of the Harry Potter property.

Then the news hit that Rowling would be returning to write the screenplays for three new films, all set in the Potter world, but this time following Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them author and magizoologist, Newt Scamander. The first film is set to be released late next year, and follows Newt during his adventures to find new magical beasts in 1920s New York City, taking place 70 years before the events of the Harry Potter films.

It looks like he’s going to run into a number of interesting characters, too. THR has reported today that “True Detective” season 2 star Colin Farrell has joined the cast of Fantastic Beasts. Farrell will play Graves, a wizard that Newt runs into during his time in New York City. He joins an already impressive cast for the film including Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) as Newt, Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice), Ezra Miller (The Perks of Being a Wallflower), Dan Fogler (Fanboys), Alison Sudol (Transparent), and more.

David Yates will be returning to the world to direct the film, after he already helmed the final four films in the Potter franchise. David Heyman will be returning to produce the film as well, along with Potter screenwriter Steve Kloves and Lionel Wigram also producing.

Farrell has been on the pop culture radar frequently the past few months during his run on the latest season of “True Detective,” and will likely fit into the Wizarding World just fine considering his past credits. With this formidable cast assembled so far, many of the original filmmakers returning for the project, and Rowling herself writing the screenplay, it looks like Fantastic Beasts might be the exact thing Potter fans have been waiting for the past few years — even if they didn’t realize it.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is set to hit theaters nationwide on November 18th, 2016!
