Shane Black has been one of the most unique and entertaining voices in the industry since the 1980s with his work on films like Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout, Last Action Hero, and more helping to shape action genre forever. However, I’ve always remained partial to his directorial debut, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which is in my opinion, one of the best films of the 2000s. The film also marked his first collaboration with Robert Downey Jr., which was later followed up in 2013’s Iron Man 3… to disappoint results.
However, the film gave Black the kind of carte blanche access to future projects that he’s always deserved, and the long time writer and director is prepping to release his follow-up film in just a few short months with The Nice Guys.
The film follows a down on his luck private detective (played by Ryan Gosling), who is unwillingly teamed up with a hired muscle (played by Russell Crowe) to help close the case of a missing girl and the seemingly unrelated death of a porn star as well. Although, judging by that synopsis, I’m going to go ahead and assume the death isn’t as unrelated as the two characters might initially assume.
The first image from the film was revealed today (via People), and offers our first official look at Gosling and Crowe’s characters in the film (see above). Black spoke about the relationship between Crowe and Gosling in the movie as well, promising a highly-entertaining onscreen duo. He should know too – considering he created one of the all time best.
“I think we’ve really lucked out. Whether this thing is a comedy with action or a thriller with jokes, one thing that’s very clear is these two are extremely funny. People will enjoy seeing the two of them.”
Elaborating more on the tone and genre of the film though, Black seems adamant that The Nice Guys has a little bit of everything:
“It is an R-rated film and it’s a caper. It’s a little fast, a little funny and a little rough in places, kind of coarse. These guys are working-class dudes, they’re not really sophisticated private detectives, so it’s a chance to do the kind of thriller I don’t see too much of anymore.”
Apparently, the writer and director sees the film as a kind of “spiritual sequel” to Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and while the elements are clearly there on paper, it’ll be interesting to see if it manages to capture the same kind of energy and watchability that the first film contains. Black is an expert at what he does though, so even if a majority of his films are remarkably similar, it doesn’t really matter if the quality never falters. As someone who was let down by how he tried to turn Iron Man 3 into something it wasn’t though, I look forward to see him return to familiar ground once again.
The Nice Guys is set to hit theatres on May 20th, 2016.
