Coming off the heels of yesterday’s logo debut, Warner Bros. has officially released the first images from next year’s Harry Potter spin-off film, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Not only do the images feature our very first look at Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, but several of the other cast members as well including Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, and more. The movie will take place nearly 70 years before the events of Harry Potter and will follow Redmayne’s Scamander as he journeys through 1920s New York City, documenting and discovering all kinds of new creatures from the Wizarding World.
Judging by these photos too, it looks like he’s going to get into all kinds of interesting situations along the way, and knowing that J.K. Rowling herself penned the screenplay, means fans might get to see parts of the Wizarding World that they’ve never seen before.
Check out all of the photos below (via EW):
As someone who grew up loving the Harry Potter films and novels, these images feel a little bit like coming home again. Collen Atwood’s costumes are featured pretty prominently throughout, and predictably, they look incredible. Despite my initial reservations too, Redmayne looks like he’s made the transition into the Harry Potter tone and world as seamless as possible, and seeing such a transformative and critically acclaimed actor running around with a wand, makes this Harry Potter fan very, very happy.
With David Yates back at the helm after his fantastic work on the final four Harry Potter films and a majority of the same creative team from the original franchise reuniting again for this new trilogy should be more than enough to make even the most skeptical fan have faith in this spin-off. Equipped with a briefcase and his wand, it looks like Scamander will be a hero almost completely different from Harry, Hermione, or Ron in the previous films. So while they might take place in the same fictional world, it looks like Fantastic Beasts could not be anymore different from its predecessors, and I couldn’t be any happier about that. It looks like Rowling and her team actually have a story they want to tell, and as someone who fell in love with the world she created a long time ago, I look forward to seeing what she has in store for us this time.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is set to hit theatres on November 18th, 2016.
