It’s sort of a miracle that the first Machete movie exists. Based on a fake trailer that ran between the Grindhouse double feature of Planet Terror and Death Proof back in 2007, Machete was released in 2010 and gave longtime character actor Danny Trejo his first leading man role. (For my full thoughts on that film, check out a podcast episode I did about it a couple years ago.) So naturally, the filmmakers are pushing their luck and making a sequel, and wisely, they’re upping the ridiculous quotient and seemingly going for broke here.
Yahoo has the first teaser trailer for the film, which again stars Danny Trejo as the titular badass who wields a huge blade (he gets a modified triple machete this time). This teaser is light on plot, but it does highlight the insane cast that Robert Rodriguez was able to get. If nothing else, this guy must have a hell of a way of convincing people to be in projects, because he was able to get Robert De Niro to play a villain last time around. This time, he’s actually dropping down a couple of notches with the casting and snatching headline-making troublemakers like Mel Gibson and Charlie Sheen (billed here as his real name, Carlos Estevez), and reaching out to people like Lady Gaga presumably to pull her music fan crowd into the theater.
I wasn’t a huge fan of the first Machete movie (I thought Hobo With A Shotgun did the whole “exploitation film” thing a lot more effectively), but part of the reason I didn’t care for it was that it didn’t quite go far enough with the insane moments. Here, it looks like they’re stepping things up, and I suspect that further trailers will confirm this. Regardless, Machete Kills is just a stepping stone to the inevitable third film in the franchise, Machete Kills Again…In Space. And no, that is not a joke – it’s 100% real. In the meantime, check out the teaser for Machete Kills below. The film hits theaters on September 13th, 2013.
