Fox Renews ‘New Girl’ for Fifth Season

By March 31, 2015

Even though Damon Wayans Jr. is leaving Fox’s comedy series “New Girl” after this fourth season is over, everyone else will officially be back in the fall.

TV Line reports Fox has renewed “New Girl” for a fifth season. In fact, production is already underway, even before the fourth season finale has aired. Why? Well, Zooey Deschanel is pregnant, so the network just wanted to get a jump on some episodes for the new season before she went on maternity leave. No, Jess will not be getting pregnant too.

Fox entertainment president David Madden says, “Four seasons in, ‘New Girl’ continues to be one of the smartest and most relatable comedies on television. The writing is razor-sharp, the ensemble is consistently hilarious, and we couldn’t be more proud of… the entire New Girl team. We absolutely love this show and we’re so excited to bring it back.”

John Cho

That’s not all of the news we have for the show’s fifth season, though, which will just so happen to usher in the series’ 100th episode. Harold & Kumar and Star Trek franchise star John Cho will have a guest role in the fifth season as a man Jess meets when she gets called in for jury duty. Will romantic sparks fly? We’ll have to wait and see.

Cho would make a nice addition for a story arc on “New Girl,” especially since “Selfie” was sadly canceled after taking just a little too long to find its footing along with a small audience. Also, let’s not forget that “Saturday Night Live” cast member Taran Killam will be popping up at some point as well.

So, we’ll get at least one more year with Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield and Lamorne Morris as roommates, and we’ll see if the next season warrants continuing their story after that. Honestly, as funny as the show still is, some of the characters still seem to be meandering without much development, mostly Winston (Morris) and  Nick (Johnson). Maybe they’ll get some new direction in the fifth season.
