Fox’s ‘Gambit’ Adaptation Zeroing In On A Director

Is there a more beleaguered film out there these days than Fox’s Gambit? The film, which is said to be a passion project for star Channing Tatum, was initially set to begin production this month, as it is currently slated for an October 2016 release. The film had a slew of high-profile directors on its must get list, but everyone who was anyone seemed to pass. Things started to look up, when in June, Rupert Wyatt took the gig. In September, director Wyatt left the project due to the infamous ‘scheduling conflicts,’ caused by budget and script delays, leaving the production in a bit of a crunch.

Now, it looks like the production is once again headed in the right direction. According to report over at The Wrap, director Doug Liman is now in talks to helm Fox’s latest comic book adaptation. The film is still being produced by Lauren Schuler-Donner and Simon Kinberg and will be a part of the X-Men universe over at Fox.

This news is kind of great, actually, because I really like Liman’s work and think that this film is a perfect fit for him. The Bourne Identity is my favorite of the Bourne films and I am absolutely, head over heels in love with last year’s Edge Of Tomorrow. Seriously, if you haven’t seen Emily Blunt kick some major ass in that film, you’re missing out!

I guess my main issue with this project, bedsides the fact that people seem to run from it like the plague, is Tatum himself. I just don’t buy him as Remy LeBeau. I think that by this point, Tatum is too big a star, and not a good enough actor, for anyone to see beyond him and actually see the character. Don’t get me wrong, I think that Channing Tatum is a good actor, who has drastically improved over the last couple of years. I just don’t see this as a good fit. Hopefully, he can prove me wrong.

Gambit is set for release on October 7, 2016.
