Talent runs in the family.

The co-writer of Gravity Jonas Cuaron – son to uber talented director Alfonso - has just been announced to be writing and directing a new take on the legendary Zorro character in ‘Z.’ As in the letter Z.

The news comes via EW, who calls it a ‘reboot.’ For me, reboot is too small a word to use in reference to this movie. I don’t consider it a reboot. I consider it – and this is based on its premise – a total and complete reimagining that is bonkers sounding – read: Cool.

Let’s look at the premise - A Zorro reboot that reimagines the masked vigilante as a futuristic hero. Interesting. Vigilante as futuristic hero. Go on…

An exclusive from The Hollywood Reporter that dropped back in August of 2015 had this to say about the premise, then titled Zorro Reborn.

Zorro Reborn is a post-apocalyptic take on the myth of Zorro, the pulp hero created in 1919. The traditional stories cast Zorro as a hero of peasants and farmers who fought against corrupt and brutal officials of Spanish-held California. Reborn is set in the near future but keeps the idea of a masked and caped stranger taking on tyrants.

Not much else is mentioned about the movie or premise so I’m just taking it at face value. It’s a re-imagination, set in the future. And when I think future, I think post apocalyptic. Naturally. I also think sci-fi so I wonder if this version of Zorro will have lasers? And swords… Or laser-swords! Wait, no. That doesn’t work.

Either way, I am strangely intrigued by this idea. As I said up top, the Cuaron family has some talent. So to take the son of Alfonso and send him off to do his first big budget movie about Zorro in the future, I bet there is a plan and some juicy ideas being bandied about.

No cast has been announced or release date so make sure you check back here for more updates on all things Zorro and Z. For some reason, I’m very interested in this one.
