FX Comedy Pilots: Zach Galifianakis & Louis C.K. for One, Charlie Kaufman, Michael Cera & John Hawkes for Another

Michael Cera - FX

The FX network has plenty of comedy (12 pilots to be exact) on the way with “Ali G: Rezurection” and a recent pilot order for “Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll” from Denis Leary, and two more pilots have just been added to the mix with some top notch comedic talent attached.

First up, after being announced as one of the directors of WGN America’s “Ten Commandments” event series, Deadline reports Michael Cera (Superbad) will star with John Hawkes (“Eastbound & Down”) in “How and Why,” a new comedy pilot from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Adaptation. writer Charlie Kaufman.

The series will follow Hawkes as Goodman Hesselman, a man smart enough to explain the inner-workings of a nuclear reactor, but no clue how to live his life. After losing his job as the host of a children’s science show called “How And Why,” he tries to start fresh with a different show in a small TV market in the middle of nowhere, which leads to some kind of supernatural world. Cera will play Mendelson, the boss of the Goodman’s new TV home, who thinks they can replicate the old show despite not being able to use any part of the old one.

The premise sounds a bit odd, but that’s Charlie Kaufman for you. Thankfully, he’ll be writing and directing the pilot, not to mention working as executive producer. Kaufman has done some great things in film, but you might not know about his work on the short-lived sketch comedy series “The Dana Carvey Show.” It’ll be interesting to see what he does with a return to the small screen at FX.

Zach Galifianakis - Dressing Room

With the second pilot, Vulture reports the network has ordered the project from Louis C.K. as part of his new production deal with FX. Unlike “Louie,” the comedian will only co-write and executive produce the show, and the star will be The Hangover scene-stealer Zach Galifianakis, who created the series and will also co-write it with Louis C.K.

Unfortunately, there are no details on the story, characters, format, or even when it might go into production, but all we really need to know is that Louis C.K. and Zach Galifianakis are involved, and just wait for it to hit the small screen.
