Back in June, we told you that FX had renewed its hit animated comedy Archer for three more seasons, keeping the show on the airwaves until at least 2019. But fans hoping for more Archer beyond that point may be in for a disappointment, as series creator Adam Reed has confirmed there are no plans to go beyond Season 10.
If you’re not familiar with Archer (shame on you), it’s a hilariously offensive half-hour animated comedy about a former spy agency that becomes a private investigation firm, led by the highly skilled and incredibly arrogant Sterling Archer (voiced by H. Jon Benjamin) and featuring a bizarre collection of supporting characters, including Archer’s fellow spy and sometimes lover, Lana (Aisha Tyler), the agency’s clueless secretary, Cheryl (Judy Greer), and Krieger (Lucky Yates), a mad scientist who may or may not have created a clone of himself.
Reed dropped the news of Archer‘s final season during an appearance on the Murmur podcast earlier this week:
“The plan is to end Archer after Season 10. I don’t know that anybody has talked about that, but that is definitely my plan – to do [Seasons] 8, 9, and 10 and they’re gonna be each shorter seasons of just eight episodes – and then wind it up.
I was gonna end it after [Season] 8, but then I had sort of a brain explosion of a way that I could do three more seasons and really keep my interest up. So the three seasons that are coming up are gonna be pretty different from what has come before, and they’re gonna be different from each other.”
It’s a shame that Archer will ride off into the sunset in the next few years , especially after taking home a much-deserved Emmy win for Outstanding Animated Program. But it doesn’t come as much of a surprise. Reed has been the sole writer on the show since its inception, and while he’s continually managed to keep things fresh, I’m sure he’d like to try exercising a different creative muscle.
In the meantime, we still have three more seasons to look forward to, and Archer will return for Season 8 sometime in early 2017 on FX.
