Poor Gambit. Just when it seemed like Channing Tatum’s dream project was finally on its way to production, director Rupert Wyatt left reportedly due to the ever-popular “issues with the script” (get the lowdown here). That followed an earlier report that, despite spending years trying to get the movie made, Tatum was actually close to walking away. At least Fox got that part straightened out (for now?), but that still leaves the film without a director. Considering the film’s current release date is less than a year away, that’s kinda sorta not good.
Last week we told you that Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow) was rumored to fill the vacancy left by Wyatt’s exit. But wait! The plot, she is a-thickening! According to a new report from Heroic Hollywood, two more names have been thrown into the mix. Joe Cornish (Attack the Block) and Shane Black (Iron Man 3) have both been approached about possibly taking the job of bringing Marvel’s favorite card-flinging Cajun to life.
Cornish’s resume is fairly limited, as Attack the Block is his only big screen directing gig so far. He does, however, hold a screenwriting credit for Ant-Man, so he’s not a complete stranger to the comic book realm. Plus, Attack the Block did feature aliens and whatnot, so he’s certainly familiar with projects that are less-than-normal. Like, say, a dude who throws exploding playing cards. Shane Black, meanwhile, is either a great choice or a terrible one depending on your views on Iron Man 3 (I hated it. Black can only get this job if he promises not to pull another stunt like he did with The Mandarin). But obviously he’s a bit more accomplished than Cornish, having also signed on to direct a new Predator film as well as another comic book adaptation in Doc Savage. Personally, I’d still go with Doug Liman, but a lot of that has to do with the fact that I LOVED Edge of Tomorrow. Frankly, all three of these guys seem qualified for the job. I just want Fox to pick somebody and get this thing made already. The delays will most likely push the release date back until sometime in 2017 unless they pick someone, like, yesterday. So…get to it, Fox!
Gambit is scheduled to be released on October 7, 2016. But that will probably change. So just keep your fingers crossed and think happy Cajun thoughts.
