Guillermo del Toro fans were heartbroken a few weeks ago when it seemed like the director’s highly-anticipated sequel to his monsters vs. robots film, Pacific Rim, had been cancelled. While no official confirmation on the project’s future has come from the studio yet, it seems like the movie has been put on an indefinite hiatus for the time being, and while del Toro recently came out and said he believes the film will happen at some point – things aren’t looking good for Pacific Rim 2.
The original 2013 film featured some of the best, large-scale action to be seen in the theatres over the past few years as audiences watched the human-operated Jaegers, taken on giant monsters called Kaiju. Some of the most memorable set pieces included one of the Jaegers hitting using a full-sized cargo ship as a baseball bat to a Kaiju’s face in the film, and while the movie wasn’t as large of a domestic success as the studio may have wanted, the film’s overall international box office ended up doing better than some analysts had predicted. So while the original film has been able to amass a large fan-following, it looks like the studio might not have as much hope in the franchise’s longevity as some viewers may have hoped.
After recently meeting with Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams though, del Toro tweeted that he would love to cast the young actress in the Pacific Rim sequel (if it does happen). Check out the tweet below:
Had lunch with Maisie Williams yesterday. Remarkable. Dammit- if PR2 happens, that girl is getting a Jaeger.

There’s no word yet on what the two talents were meeting about, but it sounds like del Toro already has some very specific ideas in mind for what he wants to happen in Pacific Rim 2. He’s now one of a number of directors who have voiced their enthusiasm over Williams’ talent in the industry though, and considering the star turn she’s had as Arya Stark on HBO’s Game of Thrones too – it’s easy to see why. Her character has continued to evolve and grow on the show, and Williams just seems to get better and better with every season, which probably makes her one of the most sought after up and comers in the industry right now.
The future of the Pacific Rim sequel still remains up in the air it seems like, and while del Toro has previously said he believes the film will still happen at some point, we also know that he’s busy at work on an upcoming, unknown indie film as well. So at this point – it doesn’t seem like anyone will really know the future of Pacific Rim 2 for the foreseeable future, and it’ll be interesting to see what kind of news might come after the release of Crimson Peak in the coming weeks, and how well the new Gothic horror does. For all we know, that film’s success level could be the deciding factor.
Pacific Rim 2 may or may not still be coming out sometime down the line. We’re really not sure at this point.
