With less than a month to go until the sixth season premiere on HBO, promotion for the latest Game of Thrones season has kicked into high gear over the past few days, with new images, magazine covers, and details about the upcoming season being released at a fairly consistent rate.
Continuing that trend as well, HBO has revealed several new images from the sixth season (via EW), teasing the return of old characters and the introduction of some new ones as well, specifically in Max von Sydow’s Three-Eyed Raven.
Check out the latest images below:
The first is of Tyrion and Varys, who we last saw taking over political control of Meereen in Dany’s absence. The description for the image states that the intellectual duo will be using their skills in Westerosian politics to try and keep the city from falling apart once again.
Perhaps one of the biggest cliffhangers of last season came with Sansa Stark and Reek jumping off the walls of Winterfell in order to try and escape the grasp of the sinister Ramsay Bolton. It looks like from this image as well, that the new season will pick up with Sansa and Reek’s story right where we left off as well, on the run through the frozen forests of the North.
Dany’s in a bit of a precarious position this season as well, as she was left trapped in an unknown territory, only to realize she had been taken back to the Dothraki culture from the first season. Now, she must try and survive in the dangerous situation she’s found herself back in, as she learns what the Dothraki do to wives of fallen clan members.
With Bran being reintroduced into the newest season as well, fans will also be introduced and learn more about Max von Sydow’s Three-Eyed Raven, who guides Bran through visions of important moments in the past, present, and future of Westeros.
The final image comes of Arya, with a kind of walking stick and bloodied lip, walking through the streets of Braavos, after being blinded at the end of the last season for violating the rules of the House of Black and White. If one thing’s for sure, it looks like Arya might be facing her biggest physical obstacle yet here, though I have faith she’ll make it through alright by the end.
In another interesting tidbit of information as well, Sophie Turner recently revealed to The Wall Street Journal, not only who she wants to end up on the Iron Throne at the end of the series, but also revealed that she wants Sansa to die by the end of it as well:
“I don’t want to survive and I want Littlefinger to end up on the throne. If you’re on Game of Thrones and you don’t have a cool death scene, then what’s the point? I think it would be really disappointing if I got to the end and I was okay.”
Alright, she’s got a point about the cool death scenes. However, I don’t know how many fans could take seeing yet another Stark family member die or be murdered onscreen, especailly after the heartbreaking cliffhanger that season five left us with.
Turner has also previously said that she believes the newest season is Sansa’s best yet as well though, and considering the brutality that her character faced last season, the fact that she might be coming back with a vengeance this time around isn’t all that shocking. How she manages to reclaim her own honor and power once again in the new season though, might end up making it one of the season’s most exciting storylines.
Season 6 of Game of Thrones will premiere on HBO on April 24th.
