‘Game of Thrones’: Queen Elizabeth Visits the Belfast Set

By June 24, 2014

Today the Queen of England, Elizabeth II, visited the Belfast, Ireland set of the hit HBO series “Game of Thrones.” She – unlike the rest of us would have – refused a chance to sit on the Iron Throne. Compared to her own squishy royal seat, it’s probably not that comfortable. The 88-year-old Queen did check out a bunch of props from the show. So, between Liz and President Obama (who reportedly asked for advanced copies of the show before Season 4 started), that’s two major world leaders who are following the residents of Westeros and Essos.

The Radio Times tweeted a photo from the visit and they have more on their site. “Game of Thrones” creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss escorted Elizabeth through the Titanic Studios set which houses an armory, a costume workshop (full of some of the best costume work on television in my humble opinion), interior sets for the show and the ice wall.

The Queen (or The Queen, as Margaery Tyrell would put it) also met members of the cast, including Lena Headey, Maisie Williams, Sophie Turner, Kit Harington, Rose Leslie, and Conleth Hill. Williams, who plays Arya Stark, stated, “She kept commenting on how uncomfortable the throne looked. That was funny.” Headey, who plays Cersei Lannister, said, “I don’t think I’ve ever been as nervous to meet anybody.” Though she didn’t sit on the Iron Throne, the Queen was given a replica. The British Monarchy’s official Twitter page sent out the following tweet:

The visit to the set was part of a larger tour of Northern Ireland, which has long been a difficult area for the British Monarchy to deal with. The Queen stated, “We have learnt a lot in those years about ourselves, each other, and how societies can only grow and flourish if they are built on trust, respect, justice and interdependence.” Sky News posted a 47 minute video of the visit on YouTube, in case you want to watch your royal worlds collide.

The final episode of Season 4, “The Children,” was the most watched finale in HBO history. Be sure to listen to our recap and review of it below:
