It’s only been a few weeks since we learned that Atlanta star Donald Glover would join the untitled Star Wars spin-off about the early days of intergalactic smuggler Han Solo. And now another big name has been added to the cast: Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke.
Best known for her role as Daenerys Targaryen on HBO’s hit fantasy series, the Emmy-nominated actress also appeared in last summer’s Terminator: Genisys, the ill-fated franchise reboot that failed to connect with critics or audiences, as well as this year’s well-received romance Me Before You.
Disney broke the news via the official Star Wars website, offering little information on Clarke’s casting other than asserting that her role “will round out a dynamic cast of characters that Han and Chewie will encounter on their adventures.”
While some fans may assume Clarke will portray a young Leia Organa, that doesn’t seem likely – the film is set prior to the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, and the idea of Solo crossing paths with the princess during his smuggling days feels like a bit of a stretch.
Another theory is that Clarke’s role could be none other than Sana Starros, a female bounty hunter from the ongoing Star Wars comic book series with a major connection to Solo’s past. This idea gained traction when it was revealed that Tessa Thompson, Zoe Kravitz and Naomi Scott had all tested for the female lead, as each actress seemed to match the character’s physical description.
Phil Lord and Chris Miller will direct the untitled Han Solo film, with Alden Ehrenreich in the leading role and the aforementioned Glover as the smooth-talking Lando Calrissian. The script comes from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: The Force Awakens writer Lawrence Kasdan and his son Jon, with production scheduled to begin early next year.
The film currently is slated for release on May 25, 2018.
