‘Game of Thrones’ Star Jason Momoa to Play Aquaman in ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’

By June 13, 2014

The character of Aquaman has been portrayed in live action on television a few times – on “Smallville,” in a failed CW pilot called “Mercy Reef,” and most famously by Adrien Grenier’s Vincent Chase character in the HBO series “Entourage” – but he hasn’t made the leap to live action feature films. That’s all about to change, though, because according to HitFix, Jason Momoa will play Aquaman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice before reprising the role in Justice League a couple of years later.

Momoa got his start on TV series like “Baywatch” and “Stargate: Atlantis” before being cast as the title character in the Conan the Barbarian reboot and scoring his breakout role as Khal Drogo on “Game of Thrones.” Drew McWeeny says he “can confirm that [Momoa] will be playing the part, and that Zack Snyder has already finalized his designs for the character so shooting can take place soon.”

Word is that the plot of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will center around the fallout caused by Superman at the end of Man of Steel, something that caused quite the rage among critics and fans alike. Aquaman is apparently among those who aren’t thrilled with Superman’s behavior, and what happened when the World Engine was released in the Indian Ocean. He reportedly “will not have a major role in the film, but he will make an appearance, and it definitely sets him up to return once Snyder gets to Justice League.” With the release schedule that leaked the other day, it makes sense that they’d need to get these kinds of deals in place quickly so they can start filming the cameos, and you can bet there will be some sort of big Comic-Con announcement about this next month. I’d expect the studio (and Momoa himself) to stay silent about this until then.

Momoa is a huge, hulking dude in real life, and even though Aquaman is something of a laughing stock in today’s pop culture, having someone who feels as if he can destroy you with one glance play that role should go a long way in giving the character some much-needed badass credibility.

The actor was actually just in the GeekNation studio last week to answer your Twitter questions (part two is coming this Tuesday), so be sure to check out that video below. He’s actually been vocal about NOT playing Aquaman recently (rumors leaked out and people have asked him about it), and even in our video, he says he’d play Lobo if he could choose any superhero to play:

At this point why not skip the story and just have a runway show of all the heroes you want to squeeze in. It’s just too much…

    • It does seem like they’re going a bit overboard with this, but if each of these smaller roles is only featured for a couple of minutes, it shouldn’t do anything more than introduce them into the universe and set them up for a larger role in future movies. Like you, I’m skeptical they’ll be able to pull it off, but I’m guessing Momoa, Gadot, and a couple of the other smaller parts will barely factor into this movie. Just a guess.
