‘Game of Thrones’ Star Kristofer Hivju Joins ‘Justice League’

By June 21, 2016

A crossover between Game of Thrones and the DC Comics Universe doesn’t seem like something that fans can expect anytime soon – but that doesn’t mean talent from HBO’s flagship series can’t be utilized to flesh out the big-screen superhero world. There’s already been a huge amount of Justice League news today, and IGN has another juicy tidbit involving Kristopher Hivju – better known to Thrones fans as Tormund Giantsbane – last seen on the battlefield in Sunday’s penultimate episode.

First, some backstory: Justice League will most likely open with some history regarding the Mother Boxes, ancient artifacts that can bestow incredible power. Producer Charles Roven told /Film:

The Amazonians and the Old Gods came together and decided that based on an event that happened, these Mother Boxes were going to be placed in the care of the Amazonians, the Mankind and the Atlanteans. And so that allows us to get into some of those environments and in our story of course Atlantis is underwater.

IGN reports that during their visit to the set of Justice League, he glimpsed some concept art on the wall of a production office, clearly featuring Hivju as an ancient Atlantean king. So it sounds like we can expect Hivju to appear in this flashback sequence, which IGN hypothesizes will be similar to “the prologue to Lord of the Rings, which described the Rings of Power and the creation of the One Ring.”

With his long hair and bushy beard, the Norwegian actor seems like a perfect choice for this kind of role – hell, I’d probably rather see him in the role of Aquaman instead of Jason Momoa, but that ship has already sailed. But it’s awesome that he’s beginning to find more high-profile roles outside of Game of Thrones – he’s also slated to appear as a villain in next year’s Fast 8.

Justice League is currently in production with a release scheduled for November 17, 2017.
