I’m not a huge horror buff, so I’ve only seen a handful of Clive Barker’s films (Hellraiser, Candyman, and The Midnight Meat Train), but the man’s reputation precedes him when it comes to telling horror stories, and when a new film adaptation of his work is in development, it’s worth talking about. Jacqueline Ess, based on one of the short stories in his second “Books of Blood” volume, is the latest project of Barker’s that is targeting the big screen, and Variety reports the filmmakers have found a heck of a leading lady to headline the project.
“Game of Thrones” actress Lena Headey will play the title character, a woman who gains the ability to alter people’s bodies with her mind and goes on to grant men sexual ecstasy – at the ultimate cost. Here’s a quick synopsis of the twisted story:
Jacqueline Ess is a housewife who attempts suicide after becoming bored with her life. She recovers only to find that she has an ability to change people’s body shapes simply with her mind. She accidentally kills her therapist and then – somewhat less accidentally – kills her husband, simply by willing their bodies into tearing apart or folding in on themselves. One man becomes obsessed with her and tracks her down. Jacqueline eventually becomes a prostitute, her abilities giving her the power to give men the ultimate sexual experience, albeit one that always proves fatal. She has by now lost control of herself and has to be watched while sleeping in case she unconsciously mutilates her own body.
That sounds pretty damn intense, but Headey’s an intense, bold performer, so we’re guessing this will be a great match. She’s certainly taken an interest in the project – she’ll produce as well as star – and it’s also interesting to note that the project will be helmed by a woman. Jovanka Vuckovic will make her feature directorial debut here, following her work on a short film called “The Captured Bird” and directing a segment of the all-female horror anthology XX.
Barker, who is executive producing the film, had this to say about Headey’s casting:
Lena Headey is a marvelous performer with an incredible presence. As far as I’m concerned, there is no better choice of actress for the role of Jacqueline. Her beauty and authority will carry the day.
Excited about seeing the 300 star back into the feature film world? Looking forward to seeing Headey take on another horror project? Let us know!
