In honor of Ghostbusters Day, which will see the original film returning to theaters for a special one-night-only engagement – not to mention stars Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live along with new Ghostbusters stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones – Sony Pictures has revealed a series of short featurettes designed to introduce audiences to each member of the new team.
It’s nice to get a sense of each character’s background and personality, since the trailers haven’t done the best job communicating any of that information. And the brief cutaways to cast interviews and behind-the-scenes footage definitely indicates that the Ghostbusters shoot was a lot of fun.
That being said, though, these featurettes still failed to sell me on Leslie Jones – I think she’s incredibly funny, but her character just doesn’t feel like it meshes well with the others. Maybe it’s because nearly every piece of marketing showcases the same couple of scenes, but I’m just not seeing the appeal of what she brings to the table.
On the other hand, these vignettes helped reinforce my belief that Kate McKinnon will be the most entertaining aspect of the new Ghostbusters film. I’ve loved pretty much everything I’ve seen from her so far, and with her character’s odd quirks and weird personality traits she seems poised to steal the film right out from under her fellow ‘Busters.
Directed by Paul Feig and also starring Chris Hemsworth, Andy Garcia, Michael K. Williams, Matt Walsh and Neil Casey, Ghostbusters will be scaring up the box office on July 15.
