Donald Glover is “very honored” to have landed the role of smooth-talking scoundrel Lando Calrissian in the upcoming Star Wars spin-off film about Han Solo’s early years as an intergalactic smuggler.
Less than a week after we learned the Atlanta creator and star had officially been cast, capping off months of rumors and speculation – not to mention an enthusiastic fan campaign – Glover spoke about the news during an appearance on Ellen.
“It’s really crazy. I don’t know, I’m very honored. It’s a very big deal. That was the first toy I had, Lando. I remember it, my dad gave it to me … I told my dad immediately … And my mom was in the back, she was like, ‘Don’t mess it up!'”
Glover’s mom shouldn’t have much to worry about – as a lifelong Star Wars fan, there’s no doubt the actor and rapper is keenly aware of the pressure that comes with taking over such an iconic role, and it’s difficult to think of someone more suited for the job.
Glover will work alongside Alden Ehrenreich, who earned the coveted role of Han Solo earlier this year after a breakout performance in Hail, Caesar! Ehrenreich told Interview magazine about the series of auditions that ultimately led to the role.
“I had an audition process that went on for a long time, and I got to spend a lot of time with the guys who are directing the film. Getting to be around them and being around the world a little bit has been the main experience so far.
“I did my audition on the Millennium Falcon for one of my screen tests, which was pretty cool. It was pretty fun, because I enjoyed the material a lot. Last year I read for the directors, then came to England and did a test on the Falcon, then came back and did a couple more screen tests in Los Angeles.”
The Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller will helm the untitled Han Solo film, which is expected to begin production early next year for a 2018 release date.
