‘Godzilla 2′ Delayed While ‘Godzilla vs King Kong’ Gets Its Release Date

While we’re still waiting to meet the newest iteration of him next year in director Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ Kong: Skull Island, the plans for the iconic movie monster have already been made several years in the future, with the already-announced Godzilla vs Kong, which will arrive after Skull Island and the planned Godzilla 2.

Now, the schedule for Legendary and Warner Bros.’ planned crossover world has been changed slightly, with both Godzilla 2 and Godzilla vs Kong receiving some new release dates.

Originally planned for a June 8, 2018 release, director Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla 2 will now arrive almost a full year later on March 22nd, 2019. In addition, after already being slated for a 2020 release, Godzilla vs Kong is officially set to hit theatres on May 29th, 2020 it looks like, with its only current competition being a mystery Marvel project also dated for a May 1st, 2020 release.

Meanwhile, Godzilla 2 will now no longer have to worry about facing off against a sixth Transformers film, which many believe to be the already announced Bumblebee spin-off, with its only competition at the moment being Paramount Pictures’ animated feature film, Amusement Park.

With Edwards currently finishing up his work on Rogue One – A Star Wars Story, which is set to hit theatres later this year, I imagine that the extra year should give him enough time to move from the Star Wars universe back into the Godzilla franchise without too much time pressure now. Following his divisive first Godzilla film though, it will be interesting to see how closely the rest of the films in the franchise stick to the tone and style shown in that film, and how much they end up deviating.

Godzilla 2 will be released on March 22nd, 2019, while Godzilla vs Kong will arrive on May 29th, 2020.
