‘Godzilla’ Director Gareth Edwards Will Direct A ‘Star Wars’ Spin-Off

By May 22, 2014

Update: The release date for this film will be December 16th, 2016, and the script will be written by The Book of Eli writer Gary Whitta. Original article follows.

There has been speculation for a long time about what the new Star Wars spin-off films will be about, and sadly, we still don’t have official confirmation. What we do know, though, is who will direct one of them.

THR reports that fresh off his blockbuster Godzilla, Gareth Edwards is attached to direct one of the three films that will fall in between entries in the new trilogy that kicks off with Abrams’ Episode VII next year. Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are writing and producing the spin-offs, and there have been rumors that these new films would concentrate on the origins of Han Solo, Yoda, and Boba Fett. There has also been speculation that one of them will be called Red Five, and follow the squadron Luke Skywalker flies in to take down the Death Star. (We know for sure that they will be origin stories, but we’re not certain about which characters will be spotlighted yet.)

For those of you worried about what this means for the future of the newly invigorated Godzilla franchise, fear not: Edwards is attached to direct both Godzilla 2 and Godzilla 3, but since the second movie is barely in the development stage, it’s not likely that will happen before he jumps on board the Star Wars train.

I’m very happy for Edwards. Here’s a guy who made a low budget, well respected monster movie that earned him a shot at the big time, and when he stepped up, he shoved aside the pressure and delivered a really cool blockbuster film that a lot of people love. Now he’s directing something in the Star Wars universe. That’s a hell of a meteoric rise.
