‘Gotham’: New Trailer Shows Us Catwoman, Penguin and Fish Mooney

By June 19, 2014

FOX has released a new trailer for its upcoming Batman/not-Batman series “Gotham.” This time around, we’re getting a look at the villains. These are the big three of the series (so far). Though the new trailer isn’t long, we get to meet a young Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova) who becomes Catwoman, Fish Mooney (a new character played by Jada Pinkett Smith) and Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Taylor) who becomes The Penguin. The thing that made them super villains, we’re told, is living in Gotham.

Shows like this all come down to writing, and I’m reserving judgement until I’ve seen the final product. It’s easy to look at this as Gotham version of “Muppet Babies.” You know, everyone all together as younger people, even if they don’t meet until later in life according to canon. Personally, I feel like I might have reached my threshold for origin stories of this kind. Too many “oh, that’s how it happened” moments and just too pat hints at and explanations for things that happen down the line. However, DC has cornered the market on superhero TV shows with things like “Arrow,” “Smallville” and “The Flash” pilot which I’ve seen and loved. I’m willing to give “Gotham” the benefit of the doubt.

That said, for a show that claims that it’s not going to focus on a young Bruce Wayne, he’s in a lot of the marketing. The show is likely going to have to spend quite a bit of time with him. Also, you don’t cast an amazing child actor like David Mazouz without using him. If you guys have never seen “Touch” (starring Kiefer Sutherland), you have to check it out. Mazouz is a revelation. The show also stars Donal Logue (who rocked the house in “Vikings” — and pretty much everything else he’s done) as Detective Harvey Bullock and Ben McKenzie as Detective James Gordon, battling the forces of evil together.

Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think. Are you excited for the show? Are you concerned that it’s going to do nothing but show us younger versions of the Batman rouge’s gallery?
