Gotham had a lot going for it when it premiered late last year. Not only had it assembled a pretty stellar cast and premise to go with it, but anyone else remember how good that first trailer was? So to say that the first season overall, ended up being a bit more lackluster than the fans had hoped, would probably be considered an understatement. What ended up as the result of tonal inconsistencies, cheesy dialogue and character arcs, and too many crammed-in comic book characters, gave the freshman season of Gotham more problems than anyone would have hoped for.
However, that’s not to say that the first season was a complete disaster. In fact, there were long stretches of episodes where the series began to correct itself in a lot of ways, and where many shows might not have gotten a second chance, there seems to be a lot of hope going into the new second season of Gotham. After several of the cast and crew members have gone on record acknowledging the issues of the first season, and how they hope to make-up for those issues in the follow-up, it seems like Gotham season 2 might just end up being the comic book show fans have been hoping it would be from the beginning.
A new teaser for the second season of the series was released online recently, and this time, it’s focusing entirely on the villains. Check out the full teaser below:
There were a lot of glimpses at this season’s villains packed into that teaser. We got new looks at The Riddler (Cory Michael Smith), Catwoman (Camren Bicondova), and some of the new characters this season, including Theo Galavan (James Frain) and his sister, Tabitha a.k.a. Tigress (Jessica Lucas). All of the characters look like they’re bringing their own unique spin on the characters once again, and it’ll be interesting to see how the Galavans influence this season’s overall story. Not to mention the continued arcs of both Edward and Selina as well, and judging by how Edward’s character in particular ended last season, it’ll definitely be entertaining for fans of The Riddler to get to see him fall deeper down that rabbit hole.
The focus of the teaser though, was easily Cameron Monaghan’s Jerome Valeska a.k.a. The Joker. After his character’s introduction ended up being one of the main highlights of last season, it’ll be interesting to see how much further his character his explored this time around. It certainly looks like he’ll be getting a large amount of screen time in the new season, and I’m hoping that the series doesn’t give us too much of The Joker. A lot of the best parts about that character revolve around how much we don’t actually know about him, and while stories like “The Killing Joke” were able to handle his origin with tact and precision, it’ll be almost too easy for Gotham to go overboard with the character. Here’s to hoping he’s in it, just enough.
Gotham Season 2 is set to premiere on Fox on Monday, September 21st.
