Green Lantern Could Appear In ‘Justice League’ After All

Next year’s Justice League features a roster of DC Comics superheroes that includes Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and The Flash. But conspicuously absent from that lineup is Green Lantern, a character that has long been a mainstay in the comic book version of the team.

Now it sounds like we’ll get a glimpse of the character after all. Well maybe.

The Wrap reveals that “a member of the Green Lantern Corps will be seen in Justice League in a key sequence.” We don’t know for certain if this will be the same Green Lantern that eventually joins forces with the other heroes, but the news should come as a relief to fans who were concerned about the status of Green Lantern Corps, which Warner Bros. has penciled in for a 2020 release.

dwaynejohnson-inset111916Green Lantern Corps was officially announced last year as part of the studio’s annual presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, but no other information has been confirmed. The project currently is without a director, producer, screenwriter or star, although Dwayne Johnson and Chris Pine were both rumored for the film at various points. Those reports turned out to be incorrect: Johnson was actually in talks for a role in Shazam, while Pine’s involvement in the extended universe turned out to be his supporting role in next year’s Wonder Woman.

The inclusion of Green Lantern in Justice League also is a bit of an interesting revelation, as producer Charles Roven had previously indicated the character would not show up until the second Justice League film, currently slated for a 2019 release. Then again, the Justice League films were originally conceived as two halves of a larger tale, but director Zack Snyder has since gone on record to confirm this is no longer the case, so perhaps the studio thought it wise to lay some groundwork for the future of their franchises.

At any rate, don’t expect Green Lantern to have a massive presence in the film, as chances are the character’s appearance will be reminiscent of the brief hero cameos in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and not a major part of the narrative.

Justice League is scheduled to hit theaters Nov. 17, 2017.
