Boy oh boy!!!
Back in September, James Gunn confirmed that he would indeed be directing the next film in the successful Marvel comics franchise, Guardians Of The Galaxy and in the last two days, I’ve heard AND read some CRAZY exciting stuff about who wants to win the “Who Wants To Be Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord?” casting game.
Quick refresher about the Guardians, then we’ll move on!
Making their first appearance back in 1969′s Marvel Super-Heroes #18, the current members of the GOTG include: Rocket Raccoon, Bug, Gamora, Groot, Drax, Star-Lord, Major Victory (Vance Astro), Mantis, Martyr, Cosmo, the Spacedog, Moondragon, and Jack Flag. Comprised of both superhumans and extraterrestrial beings, their mission is to protect the Milky Way Galaxy from any entity that threatens the lives of the people who live there.
Their leader, Peter Quill (a.k.a. Star-Lord) is half-alien (mother – human, father – alien) and an expert in close-quarter combat, firearms (both alien and human), battle techniques and is well-versed in the customs, societies and cultures of various alien species.
Translation: the actor who gets this role has to be smart, funny and in really good shape.
The list names we’ve heard bandied about for a while include Joel Edgerton (Zero Dark Thirty), Lee Pace (Pushing Daisies, The Hobbit), Eddie Redmayne (Les Miserables, My Week With Marilyn); Jim Sturgess (Across The Universe, Cloud Atlas) and Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire).
Then yesterday, this happened.
That’s right, darlings. On Wednesday, Deadline New York broke the news that Marvel has added Joseph Gordon Levitt to their wish list! THAT SAID, it’s not been confirmed if JGL’s been offered the role but his name is now on the short list.
BUT WAIT! THERE’S MORE!
Michael Rosenbaum (Smallville) DID read for Peter Quill and confirmed it HIMSELF via Twitter. I am MOST pleased by this news, so let me be the first to say “YAAAAAAAY!!!!” about how seriously awesome his being in the running really is.
BUT WAIT! THERE’S MORE!
Last night, news ALSO went out that John Krasinski from The Office (reportedly) is being considered for the role of Quill; when you think about it for a second, you gotta admit is quite intriguing.
Casting news is also starting to speculate on who’ll play this bad boy, Drax The Destroyer.
Arthur Douglas was of human origin until his entire family was wiped out by Thanos. Kronos needed someone who could stand toe-to-toe against Thanos, so Kronos took Arthur’s “spirit” and by placing it in a more suitable (and powerful) body, Drax The Destroyer came to life. His powers included enhanced strength and resilience, flight, and the ability to project energy blasts from his hands but having lost his flight and energy blast powers in 2004, it’ll be interesting to see how Gunn deals with this issue.
The three names on everybody’s lips at the moment are Brian Patrick Wade (Generation Kill), WWE superstar Dave Bautista and everyone’s favorite Old Spice pitchman (and former NFL player) Isaiah Mustafa.
from rt: Wade, Bautista, Mustafa
While looking around for images and ran across this one; seems like someone would like to see Ken Marino (The State, Party Down, Burning Love) as Peter Quill and judging from how ripped he’s been looking lately, I can’t say it’s a bad idear. Even if he’s not considered for Quill, the dude deserves to be in a superhero movie someday!
The fur will continue to fly (and best BELIEVE I’ll be keeping an eye on it) but in the meantime most of this (with the exception of Michael Rosenbaum) is all conjecture and speculation.
To quote Willy Wonka, “The suspense is terrible, I hope it lasts.”
(Until I see the first trailer, that is!)
Guardians Of The Galaxy is slated to open August 2014.
