Marvel’s latest cinematic franchise is about to make a transition to the small screen in a new, ongoing animated series to premiere on the Disney XD network in 2015.
As reported by Deadline, Guardians of the Galaxy will be getting the animated treatment courtesy of Disney animation in a new effort to keep the franchise alive in-between the Marvel Studios films. The animated series will feature the same basic cast of the film, with Peter Quill/Star-Lord leading the team, along with the deadly Gamora, the irascible Rocket Raccoon, the lovable Groot, and Drax the Destroyer. There’s no word yet on voice casting for the characters, but if the show is set to premiere next year, then casting announcements probably aren’t too far off.
James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy film proved to be a surprise success for Marvel, as the final box office take amounted to over $654 million worldwide, even outdoing the likes of both Thor films, the first two Iron Man films, and Captain America: The First Avenger. It also went on to become the most successful film of 2014 in North America. It’s pretty easy to see that Disney and Marvel would like to keep the success of the franchise going for awhile, and an animated series may be the perfect way to do that. It will be produced by Marvel Animation, produced by Dan Buckley, Alan Fine, Joe Quesada, and Jeph Loeb, with executive producers including Eric Radomski (designer on Batman: The Animated Series), Stephen Wacker (a former editor at both DC and Marvel Comics), Cort Lane, and of course, Stan Lee.
The second Guardians of the Galaxy film will be released on July 28th, 2017, with James Gunn and the entire primary cast set to return. If all goes according to plan, the Guardians animated series will be going into its third season by then.
