UPDATED: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ Adds ‘Key Mystery’ Role to the Guardians Roster

By October 28, 2015

(UPDATE: Deadline is now reporting that Klementieff’s role will in fact be Mantis in the film. Find the rest of the original report below.)

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 news coming at you! Get it while it’s hot! Because, well, I suppose it’s hot. But only if you buy into the hype that is. For me, any sort of Marvel news is hot and therefore, must be discussed. So let’s start there.

Thanks to a breaking news report from The Hollywood Reporter, unknown actress Pom Klementieff has been cast in a new, ‘key role’ in James Gunn’s follow up to his blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy. Start your “speculation” engines!

Which we will also be doing in just a moment. More on that below.

This role, apparently, was very high on Marvel and Gunn’s list of priorities as they seem to have looked far and wide for the right actress for the part:

Marvel conducted a wide search for its mystery part, which called for an Asian actress, doing several rounds of chemistry reads.

All this tells me, no matter the unknown actress or not, the role is a meaty one that will no doubt figure in to the larger connected universe.

As per THR’s report, Klementieff

Mostly worked in France. She did, however, appear in Spike Lee’s recent remake of Japanese thriller Oldboy in a role that demanded physicality and martial arts. Oldboy was her entrée into American and English-language movies.

Although I am unfamiliar with Klementieff’s work, my faith in Gunn and Marvel is unquestionable. I know they have picked a solid actress to join the returning guardians Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, and voice actors Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel.

Now, let’s get to the speculation.

A while back, before Age of Ultron, Schmoesknow.com reported they had heard of a mystery Asian female part that was glimpsed in an early trailer from Age of Ultron. According to their source, that female character was none other than Mantis – a part said to be included in Ultron as a way to connect the cosmic universe with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes – which in turn would be the first brick in the road to Infinity War.

For those needing a refresher of Mantis, and to compare the above image of Pom, see the below:

Now unfortunately, the mystery female role ended up cut from the movie. The original ‘glimpse’ was said to have been connected to the cave and “Norn” Thor goes to in order to find out about the Infinity Stones he glimpsed when Scarlett Witch screwed with his mind. This makes sense.

What also makes sense is the reason this “mystery female” was cut – there was already too much going on in the movie. Director Joss Whedon is even on record saying he fought for that particular scene with Thor as a way to connect to the cosmic side. Thor at this juncture is the more important part in Avengers obviously; no need to add in Mantis…

Until now.

Of course, this is complete speculation on my part but because of the Schmoes’ scoop, coupled with the character’s backstory from the comics, it makes a lot of sense to add her in now. Heres a quick set-up from Wikipedia that illustrates the cosmic ties:

Mantis is the half-Vietnamese, half-German daughter of Gustav Brandt—Libra—and was born in Huế, Vietnam. In her childhood, her father leaves her in Vietnam at the Temple of the alien Priests of Pama, a sect of the Kree. The Kree believe she might become the Celestial Madonna and mate with the eldest Cotati on Earth to become the mother of the Celestial Messiah, “the most important being in the universe.”

Moreover, a recent entry in the comics world shows a direct connection to none other than Star Lord himself:

Mantis appears in the 2007 miniseries Annihilation Conquest: Star-Lord, where she is shown as a Kree prisoner who volunteers for a mission led by Peter Quill, a.k.a. Star-Lord.

Guardians of the Galaxy is now part of the A-list as far as Marvel movies are concerned with the first movie grossing $774 million dollars at the box office. It’s dominated conversations like this with casting and story direction; even fans are trying to find hidden Easter Eggs that will fuel discussions for Vol 2. and beyond. (Have you checked out our bounty for the last Easter Egg in GotG?).

With this latest casting, and my Mantis speculation that can tie both Earth and Cosmic sides together in the Marvel Universe, I believe it’s Vol 2 that will make that connection a lot more clear. Now, all we can do now is wait and see what James Gunn has up his sleeve.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 comes out May 5, 2017 with shooting to start in early 2016.
