If attendees at San Diego Comic-Con know anything, it’s that Marvel usually brings out the big guns for the annual presentation on the Hall H stage. In the past, we’ve seen Robert Downey Jr. burst through the curtain at the back of the room and dance his way onto the stage, we’ve seen Tom Hiddleston attempt a hostile takeover in full Loki regalia, and we’ve seen tons of exclusive footage long before it was available to the general public.
Last year was something of an anomaly, however, as Marvel Studios was conspicuously absent from the annual pop culture extravaganza, opting instead to appear at Disney’s D23 Expo the following month. Sure, it was a treat for anyone who managed to attend both events – like me – but it came as something of a disappointment to the thousands of fans willing to camp out overnight in hopes of squeezing into Hall H and getting their first look at the next Marvel adventure.
But with D23 taking place every other year, that means Comic-Con will once again be the best destination for Marvel to pull back the curtain on their upcoming slate. Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 helmer James Gunn have been teasing their attendance at this year’s show, and during a Twitter Q&A session yesterday, Gunn seemed to confirm that fans who attend the Marvel panel will be treated to their first look at the new adventures Peter Quill and his companions:
You might get something if you go to our presentation at San Diego Comic Con… other than that, it’ll be a while. https://t.co/w9sYY9QyYz
— James Gunn (@JamesGunn) July 4, 2016
This would make a lot of sense, as the first public footage from the original Guardians of the Galaxy was screened on the Hall H stage in 2013 to a thunderous ovation – and that was after the team had only been shooting for ten days. With Guardians Vol. 2 completely wrapped, we’re expecting Gunn (who should be attending along with the cast) to completely blow the roof off the building.
Starring Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, and Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) as the voice of Rocket, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will blast its way into theaters on May 5, 2017.
