Guardians of the Galaxy featured a number of obscure and unique characters from the Marvel comics. Most of the main Guardians themselves were pretty unknown names for a majority of comic book readers even before the film was announced, and the fact that the movie ended up doing so well, was not only a testament to Marvel’s strength as a brand right now, but also to the film’s overall quality.
One of the more interesting and weird characters introduced in the film though was Benicio del Toro’s, The Collector. Speaking with an intense grumble and snow-white hair, the character helped to explain the full power of the Infinity Stones to our lead group of heroes, as they were surrounded by glass cases filled with his different collectibles (some of which were living things). The last we saw of him was during the film’s Howard the Duck end credits sequence though, and we haven’t heard much regarding his role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 – if he even has one.
In a recent video poster on her husband’s Facebook page though, Gamora herself, Zoe Saldana praised del Toro’s performance in Sicario and seemed to possibly confirm his return when she ended the video with “I’ll see you on Guardians.” Check it out below:
Now, this is by no means an official confirmation and director James Gunn has remained pretty quiet when it comes to what side characters will and will not be making appearances in Vol. 2. However, considering all of the Easter eggs hidden in the Collector’s room, and his intense fascination with the Infinity Stones, it would certainly seemed like a missed opportunity if the character didn’t return for at least another small role in the film. Especially if Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, will in any way help to set up Avengers: Infinity War.
Del Toro has been having a pretty great year so far, with the current Oscar buzz regarding his performance in Sicario (deservedly so by the way, read our review here), as well as being cast in Star Wars: Episode VIII. This might just be another awesome announcement for the actor, who has been fairly successful for decades now, but has come back into prominence with some of his latest films. As someone who cannot wait to see what he does in Star Wars and will never stop raving about him in Sicario too – I’m crossing my fingers that we’ll see him again in Vol. 2.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is set to hit theatres on May 5th, 2017.
