Guillermo Del Toro To Shoot A “Strange Little Movie” Before ‘Pacific Rim 2’

By July 9, 2014

It’s no big secret that I dig Guillermo del Toro and his adaptation of Hellboy, as well as his films Blade II, Pan’s Labyrinth, and of course Pacific Rim.

And while del Toro has confirmed he’ll be back in the director’s chair for Pacific Rim 2 and is currently in post-production on his horror film Crimson Peak, he has ONE thing he’d like to do before heading in to start PR2: a “strange little movie” with a small cast that very well may star John Hurt (Ollivander from Harry Potter film franchise)!

In an exclusive interview with Collider, del Toro revealed that before starting pre-production for PR2 in August, he’ll start shooting this small black and white movie:

Right away, in February/March I should [start on] another very small movie, black and white, really, really bizarre before starting—we start pre-production on Pacific Rim 2 in August, and then I interrupt it briefly to go into the first of next year to do this strange little movie, and then I restart it and go all the way until we start shooting Pacific Rim 2 at the end of 2015 for release in 2017.

It’s a very small cast.  I would love to have John Hurt, and there’s an actress that I have in mind that is not well-known but I’ve seen her in a short film.  That’s all she’s really done, one feature and one short, but she has an incredibly interesting taste and I’m gonna try her out for the main role.

And when Collider tried to get the name of the film out of him, he replied “It does [have a title], but I find—I’d rather do the projects and then show them to people than talk about them. I think that it’s going to be a nice thing for people to know which one is it and where it came from when it’s a reality.”

At this point, I don’t care WHAT the name of the film is or what it’s about because I already know I’m gonna go see it for one VERY good reason: “There’s one great creature in it,” he revealed, and knowing del Toro, this “one great creature” is gonna be friggin’ AMAZING.

Pacific Rim 2 is set for a 2017 release, but there’s no word yet on the black and white film’s release date!

What do you think about all of this del Toro goodness?
