‘Hail, Caesar!’ Trailer Takes the Coen Brothers Into Hollywood’s Golden Age

By October 9, 2015

The Coen Brothers have made a name for themselves as two of the best filmmakers of the past few decades. With a number of films that are likely to be remembered as cinematic masterpieces in the years to come, the duo have never seemed to do anything twice. They’ve always challenged traditional tones and formal ways of storytelling in a way that I think has always entranced audience members from the beginning of their career until now.

However, with their next film, titled Hail, Caesar!, which is set in the Golden Age of Hollywood and features an incredible cast including Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Scarlett Johansson, Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Ralph Fiennes, Frances McDormand, and more – it doesn’t really seem like anyone knows what to expect from the Coen Brothers this time.

The first trailer for the film has been released online, giving fans their first ever look at Hail, Caesar!. Check it out below:

Here’s the film’s official synopsis:

“Four-time Oscar®-winning filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen (No Country for Old Men, True Grit, Fargo) write and direct Hail, Caesar!, an all-star comedy set during the latter years of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Starring Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, Channing Tatum, Scarlett Johansson, Jonah Hill and Frances McDormand, Hail, Caesar! follows a single day in the life of a studio fixer who is presented with plenty of problems to fix.”

The movie looks like it’s harkening back to the same kind of oddball comedy tone that the filmmaking duo perfected in films like O Brother, Where Art Thou? and The Big Lebowski, only this time using the actually crazy lifestyle many of the stars lived in the era to help create a fun, and zany tone. The trailer shines a spotlight on several of the film’s stars as well with Brolin and Clooney standing out in particular, who will be returning to work with the duo after several previous collaborations.

I still don’t think we know for sure what to expect from Hail, Caesar! next year because I don’t think that you ever really do with a Coen Brothers movie. I think there are a fair amount of people out there who would have gone to see this film even without seeing a trailer though, and if that doesn’t prove just what kind of a legacy the Coens have established for themselves already, then I don’t know what does.

Hail, Caesar! is set to hit theatres on February 5th, 2016.
