J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode VII: Whatever They’re Going to End Up Calling It isn’t expected to have a Comic-Con presence this year, but that doesn’t mean that the highly anticipated sequel isn’t spending the days leading up to the convention parceling out cool pieces of information — both on purpose and (we assume) wholly accidentally.
First up, the juiciest — and the most up for debate, most spoilery, and sort of most terrifying: a vague plot description rumored to detail what we can expect to see from the film. Well, kind of. The news come to us from Badass Digest, and despite a splashy promise that their exclusive post will reveal big details about the film, the meat of the story is surprisingly (and purposely) obscured. What BAD does have to offer, however, are some overarching ideas and even a few big visual motifs. Ready?
Imagine the standard Star Wars crawl, and when it ends the camera pans up to the stars. But instead of a spaceship zooming into frame we see… a hand! A severed hand, tumbling through space. A severed hand gripping a light saber.
That hand falls onto a desert planet, where it is discovered by characters who will be our heroes. One is Daisy Ridley. The other is John Boyega, who is playing someone trying to change his path in life (again, I’m keeping it vague here). They recognize the light saber as a Jedi relic and decide to return it to the proper people.
Suitably intrigued? There are a few more details you can check out there. It’s okay, we’ll wait.
If you’ve managed to catch your breath after that big ol’ chunk of information, there’s still more Star Wars stuff to get into. Official stuff, too!
Abrams himself took to video to announce a very exciting competition and to give us an “accidental” (oh, ha ha ha) look at a new X-Wing prototype. As part of the “Star Wars: Force for Change” charitable initiative, Abrams and LucasFilm have just announced that they’re giving away a chance for Star Wars fans to check out their own private screening of Star Wars: Episode VII before the film hits theaters.
But how do I win?!, you’re probably screaming right now, and we’ve got you. And, guess what? It’s both simple and good.
All you have to do to be eligible to win is to donate to the Force for Change Omaze campaign (it’s kind of like Kickstarter) before July 25th. It doesn’t matter how much you give, every contribution at any level is eligible. (And, if you give in the next four days, you can also be in the running to win a bit part in the film itself.) If you’ve checked out the Omaze page before — which is packed with other amazing prizes at various giving levels — you’ve probably noticed that the giving levels with the highest price tags include private screenings, but for just this next week, every entry is entered into a contest to win a private screening. Not too shabby.
Oh, you wanted to see that X-Wing, too? Okay.
Star Wars: Episode VII will open on December 18, 2015.
