HBO Teams Up With Hip Hop Stars For “Catch The Throne” Mixtape Based on ‘Game of Thrones’

By March 5, 2014

UPDATE: Hear the entire mixtape for free at the bottom of this post.

For the longest time, I’ve heard comments about how HBO’s hit series “Game Of Thrones” is “only enjoyed by white and Asian nerds (of which I am both),” and even some African-American friends (including my ex-roommate) have told me “Girl, black people don’t watch that ish.”

Well, I’m here to tell you what I already knew AGES ago…that’s simply NOT true. And thanks to HBO, we’re gonna get access to the what could be one of the most epic and bizarre mixtapes ever.

HBO has teamed up the likes of Big Boi (Outkast), Wale, Common, Daddy Yankee, Bodega Bamz and a number of Latin artists who have lent their talents to a ten-track “Game Of Thrones” mixtape appropriately titled “Catch The Throne,” with the obvious goal of reeling in the African-American and Latino crowd.

With season three’s demographics showing that while the show DOES have multicultural viewers, the Nielsen numbers show it’s an uneven viewership with a whopping 76.6% white, 13.2% black and 9.2% Hispanic audience. Lucinda Martinez, HBO’s senior vice president for multicultural marketing, told the Wall Street Journal that “Our multicultural audiences are a very important part of our subscribers, and we don’t want to take them for granted.” Hence, the mixtape.

In that same interview with HBO’s Martinez, actor/hip hop artist Common (above) said he “loves [the show’s] complexity and the depth of characters such as Tyrion Lannister – a raconteur, womanizer and royal adviser,” and his track is “about what it feels like to battle to be top dog and the things people are willing to do get there. With lyrics like “I sit and think when I’m in my zone / This life is like a Game of Thrones,” over what WSJ described as “a swell of strings and timpani drums,” I gotta admit, that sounds really dope.

Big Boi, who’s watched the series and now reading the book season three is based on because he “wanted to see what happens in the next season,” is a hardcore fan of “GoT” and raps about Khaleesi being the mother of dragons with an epic hook “Dungeons, dragons, kings and queens!” while a military march-style beat pumps in the background.

The best part: “Catch The Throne” will be easier to grab than the ACTUAL Iron Throne as this mixtape will be released online for FREE. You best believe I’ll be downloading it!

Winter is coming…with some MAD beats behind it.

“Catch The Throne” will be released online Friday, March 7th, for FREE.
